New £500 Priority Service for British Citizenship Applications

From 6 July 2026, applicants for British citizenship have a new option to request faster processing of their application.

For an additional £500, applicants using the new nationality priority service should normally receive a Home Office decision within 30 working days of submitting their biometric information—approximately six weeks. This is a significant reduction compared with the standard processing period, under which applicants will usually receive a decision within six months.

The priority fee is payable in addition to the normal citizenship application fee and must be selected when the application is submitted. Importantly, an existing citizenship application cannot later be upgraded to the priority service.

Is a decision within 30 working days guaranteed?

The Home Office describes the 30-working-day period as the normal expected timeframe rather than an absolute guarantee. An application may take longer where it requires:

  • enhanced scrutiny or external checks;
  • identity or national security enquiries;
  • additional information or supporting evidence; or
  • consideration of particularly complex circumstances.

Paying for priority treatment does not alter the eligibility requirements or make an application more likely to succeed. It simply places the application into a faster processing route.

Applicants should also remember that the service expedites the Home Office decision only. Where an application is approved, the citizenship ceremony and any subsequent British passport application remain separate stages.

Should you use the priority service?

The new service may be particularly useful for applicants who need an earlier decision for professional, family, travel or personal reasons. However, careful preparation remains essential. Errors, incomplete evidence or unresolved issues in an applicant’s immigration history could still lead to delays or refusal.

LF Legal can assist with assessing eligibility, reviewing residence and absence records, addressing good-character or immigration-history issues, preparing the application and advising whether priority processing is appropriate.

Need a faster decision on your British citizenship application?

From 6 July 2026, applicants can pay an additional £500 for the new British citizenship priority service. The Home Office will normally aim to issue a decision within 30 working days after biometrics, compared with the usual processing period of up to six months.

The priority option must be selected when submitting the application—an application that has already been filed cannot later be upgraded. The 30-working-day timeframe is not guaranteed where a case is complex or requires additional identity, security or external checks.

Priority processing speeds up the decision, but it does not relax the citizenship requirements or improve the prospects of approval. A carefully prepared and fully evidenced application remains essential.
